Just Hanging Out is a reductive, multi color, lino-cut by Monique Wales. An edition of only 5 pieces, this image is of the cones from a Sugar Pine tree and two Red-breasted Nuthatches. Monique writes:
Sugar Pines are the world's tallest pines, and were prized by Indigenous peoples who used the seeds and bark for food, rootlets for baskets, the sweet resin for glue or gum, and the leaves and bark to make medicinal teas.
A number of bird and animal species also make use of their seeds including birds such as grouse, crossbills, jays, nuthatches, siskins, woodpeckers, and squirrels. l've included a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches as adornments to these two cones, though you could probably hear them before you spotted them in a real tree! Sugar Pines silhouettes are easily spotted by looking for their magnificent pine cones (up to 26" long) dangling from the boughs.
Only one remains - this is the last of the edition! Edition number 4

From 1985 until 1990, she wasan artist in residence at Kala Institute in Berkeley , California where she focused on traditional intaglio printmaking techniques, includingmezzotint. Her bold colors are made by“spot-rocking”, using multiple plates, masking and some hand-coloring. “ Throughout my life, I have been fortunateenough to travel extensively. From an early age I was exposed to avariety of cultural aesthetics. During such adventures I absorbedeverything from primitive folk art to the wildly ornate theatrics of Baroqueembellishment and the ariel feats of Gothic cathedrals. I also becamefascinated with the myths and narratives so abundant in every corner of theworld. Because of this focus, I never felt an affinity with abstractexpressionism. In spite of growing up in the 60’s and 70’s when itflourished so, I chose to virtually ignore it as an influence and insteadbecame somewhat shamelessly representational. As such, my influencesamongst the contemporary fine artists of the world are few. I do creditthe usual old masters in particular Albrecht Durer whose engravings were aninspiration to take up a somewhat religious zeal toward printmaking while incollege. However, though it is almost taboo to say it, during my“formative years” I fairly worshiped illustrators in general. Alreadyheaded in the direction of having an illustrative style, it seemed quitenatural that I should gravitate to those whose work exhibited a mastership ofillusionism. Sharon Mitchell has regularly moved between naturalstudies and the pursuit of images that convey a sense of theater, emphasize thegrace and structural integrity inherent in natural forms, and produce an encounterwith the dramatic, the bizarre and the humorous. Raven is an etching with some hand coloring by Nancy Charles. Nancy grew up in Miami, Florida, spending a lot of time in the Everglades and near the ocean. Her strong love for animals and the outdoors can be traced back to those early years and continues to be a guiding force in her life today. Nancy's interest in art came from her father, Clayton Charles, who was the chairman of the art department at the University of Miami. Since that early age, she has expressed herself through her art. A passion for nature was fostered by summers spent at the family cabin in the mountains of Southern California. Takigawa studied painting and art history at Pasadena City College and Monterey Peninsula College. She studied fine art printmaking at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Painting and printmaking each provide distinct and unique opportunities for Takigawa to render her feelings artistically. In her paintings, the viewer senses a conversation between the subject and the paint-loaded brush. Fine art printmaking is a collaboration between an artist and an etching press. Pamela’s monotypes are one of a kind. They are created by painting on a flat, unaltered plate. Then the image is transferred to the paper using the pressure provided by a press. She savors the moment each time she lifts the paper off the inked plate revealing the print.
