JENNIFER CLARKE

USA

Jennifer Clarke was born in 1943 in England, and graduated from Goldsmiths College of Art, London, in Sculpture and Printmaking.

She moved to Denmark in 1967 and made a living in the museum world of conservation restoring decorative arts. She first returned to printmaking in her spare time during the mid 1990’s, then gravitated toward mezzotint in 2009.

Jennifer first visited the Southwest in 1989, where she at once experienced a sense of belonging when she arrived in the Sonoran Desert. It was an immediate fascination for a somewhat hostile world of extreme heat and dryness, but where the monsoon rains are essential for everything’s survival. Animal and insect life is amazingly abundant, and plant life is adorned with thorns and spines creating repelling protections for a vulnerable, fragile beauty. It is these observations whilst living in this contradictory world that you see reflected in her mezzotints.

Having moved permanently to Arizona in 2016, she continues creating mezzotints reflecting her desert environment. Mezzotints that she sees as expressing her endeavours to capture glimpses of that resilient yet fragile beauty she finds in the Sonoran Desert.

Jennifer has exhibited in England, Denmark, Russia, Japan and her prints have been in large number of juried shows in the United States. She is a member of Graphic Artists in Denmark.
