William Broderson  - USA
turned wooden bowls

William Broderson specializes in wood-turned bowls, vessels, vases and boxes.  He refers to these as “Art from Nature”.  His creations begin with the selection of high value, quality wood.  Wood used for his work is often highly figured, rare or exotic.  Prior to turning, it is carefully looked over to identify the best features that will add artistic character to the piece. One of his special techniques is the use of inlaid semi-precious stones , complimentary woods and color highlights with texturing to make his work unique.  Large pieces of turquoise, white buffalo and other stones give the artistic pieces an individual quality that cannot be duplicated as no two stones or blocks of wood are the same.William finds South West Indian pottery and Indian art not only pleasing to the eye and inspirational, but functional as well. He has patterned his “Art from Nature” on the same principal.  Working from his studio in Nevada, he continues to innovate and hone his craft with each new piece

Stephen McMillan - USA
aquatint etchings

Born in Berkeley, California in 1949, Stephen McMillan was raised in a home that had a sweeping view of the San Francisco Bay.  This scene kindled his interest in landscape and was one of his earliest drawing subjects.  He had his first one man show when he was sixteen.

Steve studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and for one year at Hornsey College of Art in London, England, where he concentrated on sculpture.  It was at Santa Cruz, in 1969, that Steve was first introduced to etching.  Since he received his BFA from UCSC in 1975, he has focused on creating aquatint etchings of wilderness landscapes, drawn freehand from photographs he has taken.

From 1975 to 1979 he worked at Graphic Arts Workshop in San Francisco.  For most of the years from 1979 to 1992 he was an artist in residence at Kala Institute in Berkley, where he taught classes in printmaking, and wrote three technical articles about aquatint etching.  From 1992 until 2005 he lived and worked in Petaluma.  He now lives in Bellingham, WA.

Dave Sellers - USA
oil paintings

California artist, Dave Sellers started his career painting watercolors of North American waterfowl.  His work soon caught the attention of various conservation groups, including the California Waterfowl Association and Ducks Unlimited.  These two organizations helped to publicize Dave’s work through their fund raising efforts and he soon became well known throughout the state among those interested in preserving wetland habitat.

As a young artist, he was honored as California Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year, California Waterfowl Association Artist of the Year, Best of Show at the National Wildlife Art Show and had received seven additional best of show honors at wildlife art shows across the country.  His work as a waterfowl painter has been featured in national publications including U.S. Art, Wildlife Art News, as well as numerous local newspaper articles.   He has also had his work accepted six times in the prestigious “Birds in Art” exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum of Art.  This exhibit is held annually and attracts artists from all continents to submit work for jury into what has become the hallmark of achievement in art featuring birds.  When first accepted, he was the youngest American artist to be so honored. His work has toured with the exhibit both nationally and internationally and additionally, the museum has added Dave’s work to their permanent collection.

In 1995, while traveling in Alaska and Canada, Dave began painting on location outdoors.  Although he had previously done some plein-air pieces, never had he experienced the sense of affinity for the land as he did during this period of immersion in outdoor painting.   Following this trip, he put together his collection of field studies and presented them at an exhibit in Seattle, Washington, where all the work sold.   Since this initial success, Dave has been painting landscapes almost exclusively.  His style is reminiscent of the early California masters, yet shows an amazing freshness and individuality.

Justin Ward - USA
chine' colle' etchings

Justin Ward grew up in Central California.  After graduating from Carmel High School in 1979, he attended art school at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland and received a graphic design degree.  While at CCAC he taught himself the art of etching by using the printmaking studio facilities at nights and weekends. He has been a working professional art director for over 20 years but never lost his initial love for printmaking.

Although heavily influenced by Whistler and by local Monterey artist/etcher Armin Hansen, Justin has a unique style that combines years of studying the old masters and his own fresh approach to printmaking.

Doug Hunt - USA
oil stick paintings

Doug Hunt was born in Sacramento, California, 1949 . During four years in the Coast Guard he applied for and was assigned to Honolulu's 14th Coast Guard district headquarters as artist and photographers mate. There he created cartoons, article illustrations and photographs for the Coast Guard publication, Pacific Shield.

Upon leaving the military, Doug settled in Gresham, Oregon and continued his education at Mt. Hood Community College.  He began working as a commercial freelance illustrator.  With a solid understanding of perspective drawing, he became involved in architectural rendering and before long was working for several of the house planners and designers in the Portland area.

Eventually, he was offered a part time job teaching architectural drawing at Mt. Hood.  In 1981, he left the freelance business for a job offer in Wiesbaden, Germany as the illustrator for the American Military Club System. Doug found working for the military a bit taxing so by 1983 he was back home with an armload of castle drawings and 3,000 photographs. He resumed his business, expanding it to include photography.

Much of the fine art Doug creates today is accomplished in oil stick. It's a medium he has been exploring since the mid 80's, searching out its potential. Since 1998, he has concentrated on landscapes and has created many series of similar works including “Path to the Villa” and “From the Fields”.

PAMELA TAKIGAWA - USA
monotypes

Pamela Takigawa was born in Los Angeles and lived there until 1970 when she moved to the Monterey Peninsula.   She studied painting and art history at Pasadena City College and Monterey Peninsula College.  She studied fine art printmaking at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

Painting and printmaking each provide distinct and unique opportunities for Takigawa to render her feelings artistically.  In her paintings, the viewer senses a conversation between the subject and the paint-loaded brush.  Fine art printmaking is a collaboration between an artist and an etching press.  Pamela’s monotypes are one of a kind.  They are created by painting on a flat, unaltered plate.  Then the image is transferred to the paper using the pressure provided by a press.  She savors the moment each time she lifts the paper off the inked plate revealing the print.                       back to Mission Gallery HOME

JÜRGEN GÖRG - Germany
etchings & stone lithographs

Born in Dermbach in West Germany in 1951 Görg’s formative years were spent in Koblenz before moving to Mainz to study at the Johannes - Guttenberg University for four years. He began his professional career in 1977 as a painter and printmaker and in 1980 he was awarded a special prize by the district of Rheinland - Pfalz. His first sculpture was completed in 1990.

His artistic universe consists of lovers, dancers, musicians and masked personages.  An elusive quality is cultivated by Görg who feels that "something should always be left open".

In his work, Jürgen often uses a monochromatic palate. Soft colour is applied with graphite in combination with translucent layers of oil paint. Shading is subtle, white highlights focus attention as does the sparing use of bright colour.

Anne belov - USA
etchings

Anne Belov has been painting and drawing for more than 25 years.  She received her BFA from Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) in Philadelphia, PA and her MFA from the University of Washington.  Her work is in many collections and has been exhibited in Alaska, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C. and Washington State.  Her work has been featured in "American Artist Magazine" in 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1995.

Anne Belov states, "My objective is to create a sense of place and time through light, color, composition, and relationships between objects.   My work contains both still life and landscape images, sometimes in the same painting.

"I was attracted to the art of etching by my love of drawing, and the line illustrations of an earlier era.  Building my compositions through line, texture and tonalities satisfies an impulse that is different than painting with acrylics or watercolors.  It is my sincere belief that different media and techniques feed each other, and that I bring things to etching from my paintings, and then back again to printmaking."

Leonardo Nunez

Leonardo Nunez - USA
etchings & mezzotints

What is most remarkable about the work of Leonardo Nunez is not the range of media he covers. From the etching of small copper plates used to produce his recently completed series of prints depicting the California missions, to murals eighty feet wide such as the Randolph Mansion mural (80'x14') located in Lompoc, Leonardo moves easily between extremes. What is most remarkable is his ability to maintain a high degree of craftsmanship no matter what medium or form he is working in. Art is one thing. The fusion of art and craft is another, something not easily found these days.

Leonardo lives and works in Lompoc, California. For many years he has volunteered his time with the California Youth Authority at the Los Prietos Boys Camp. He works with the youth incarcerated there as a drawing and painting instructor, work for which he has been recognized by the County Board of Supervisors. Leonardo also speaks and conducts workshops on a variety of topics, from printmaking and the art of the mural, to color theory and specific media, such as acrylics or oil painting.
